Morale destruction due to layoffs

There are layoffs and consolidation that does not help morale and can be demoralizing. Some offices are like cattle farms, there are too many VPs, SVPs and other middle managers, many of whom don't even have anyone reporting to them. It'll be nice if the management is more pro-active, in terms of reaching out to employees and getting their feedback instead of putting pressure on them in terms of workload or threats of layoffs.
