Because so many teams are globally distributed, it is impossible to have any sort of close working relationship with coworkers. Company definitely supports their management staff, no matter how poorly.

I think Stephen Elop's 'Burning Platform' memo is a great way to see the current situation here. I truly hope Nokia can regain the lost momentum. Pairing up with Microsoft will be good. It'll also create a healthy competition between the three major providers of mobile/tablet platforms.

layoffs are better here, as employees are paid severance and are given atleast a month long notice period. this ofcourse differ from country to country. hr has been largely helpful, but even they are being affected...

The management doesn't give a damn if employees are unhappy or frustrated; as far as they are concerned they can hire a whole new staff on cheap wages and layoff their current employees. Nokia as a whole undercuts its sharpest minds by requiring them to work extraordinary long hours with little praise and little hope of advancement. All of this is damaging morale.
