Work Stability

about
Feast or Famine. Worked for N/S for 4 years, got sick and tired of the layoffs every six to 12 months, decided that bagging groceries would be a better way of life. I left and haven't looked back, miss the folks, but not the job.

Layoffs keping us up at night

about
I have been working here for 18 years and now it seems to me that my time of layoff has come before my service completion. I could talk to my manager about it but it will be of no use as I know I will be given no reasons for it.
Many others are also thinking about it and everybody looks terribly worried. These are many new and old people – everyone is concerned. I can see both povs – keep us with experience as we know what to do and will be harder for us to find a job – but my young co-worker argues young professionals have just started their career and it would be injustice to send them home. Oh, well – just keep losing sleep till happens one way or the other.

Norfolk Southern layoff

about
I was only laid off about a year and a half ago. It was just like any other day, and then I was called into the HR office. I was being laid off. I asked about severance, but they didn't have any for me. I was surprised because I had heard that the people who are laid off are compensated with severance package. What a pity! I couldn’t even argue with them.

Experiience is King

about
Many people here are third and even forth generation railroaders, and the knowledge and experience we pass on to the fresh employees should be inspiring. However, many young twits are unappreciative . Many young managers are fresh out of college and have no hands on experience doing railroad work that they have to evaluate and supervise and so most projects lead to downtimes or unmet targets. However, if they are completed on time and on budget they are viewed as successful; even though they cost the company more money in the long run.
