about
I worked at the Stephenson plant from the begininng till the end for what I thought were an honorable and law abiding company but in the end they behaved like shady second hand car dealers in there treatment of a loyal and hard working workforce. They contravened UK employment law in the most dispicable way and 1 year down the line the people are having to go to an industrial tribunal to get there legitamate contractual redundancy pay, even though they had paid out on this agreement around 5 times in the previous years. They also failed to consult at the right time and prior to the closure virtually begged the workforce not to Join the union knowing full well they would have little or no representation when they announced there intention to close. Even though they were profitable at the Stephenson site I can fully understand a business decision to close the plant to increase there profit margins but the least they could do would to treat the workforce in a Professional, ethical and legitamate manner. I would advise all TRW workers who are not covered by an organisation like a trade union to get some cover now as the corparate management of this company will walk all over you and discard you like a piece of trash. The dollar is above all to these people and there cut throat style of management proves this. Honest Joes engine valves was the name Stephenson employees branded then and they are not that far from the truth

Layoffs

about
TRW has laid off over 1000 White Collar employees globally since July of 08. As of yesterday, March 13th, an undisclosed number of employees were laid off from the TE&E (Electronics) group at the Headquarters in Livonia Mi. Rumor has it that Middle Management is next, possibly by the end of March 09.

Layoffs aren't handled very well and the only advanced notice is by the rumor mill that usually lasts weeks prior to the layoff, causing anxiety and concern for all, lowering morale and productivity. The max severance is 2 weeks pay for each year of service up to 16 weeks pay max with health coverage upto 16 weeks as well. So someone there longer than 8 years gets the shaft when laid off.

Merit raises over the last 6 or 7 years has only been in the 1 to 2 percent range, with no merit in 09. Layoffs are handled on a department by department basis, with the department manager picking and choosing who goes. Each department is requested to eliminate a set percentage and seniority is not a consideration. Some department managers seems to lay you off if they don't like you, regardless of your performance is good.

I've been lucky to dodge the proverbial bullet 4 times now after 20+ years of service.

Happy Ex

about
It was a great company to work for. Entering as a college grad, I had the opp to move across multiple divisions within the company like, finance, production, sales & marketing and operations etc.

Every division was filled with very talented, capable and cooperative managers who let me work on some challenging projects that really helped my confidence and career. They did not treat me as an internee and were always willing to guide. The environment at TRW is extremely professional and respectful. It’s a good start for your career.
